Changes to MS Teams licensing structure as of October 1, 2023

As of October 1, 2023, Microsoft is making a number of changes to the Microsoft 365 licensing structure, which means Microsoft Teams may or may not be included in your license from now on. This is the result of the European Commission’s announcement that they are launching an official investigation into how Microsoft Teams is bundled with other packages, and whether that is a breach of competition law.

What does this mean for you?

It all depends on your organization’s specific Microsoft 365 licenses.

If you are already a Microsoft customer with:

  • Enterprise licenses (Office E1/E3/E5 and M365 E3/E5)

Your existing licenses are not affected. You will continue to be entitled to your existing licenses for the remainder of your contract and if you choose to renew it, these licenses will remain available to you, including Teams.

However, if you decide to purchase a new type of license during the term of your contract, you will only be able to select licenses that exclude Teams and the corresponding Teams add-on.

  • Frontline licenses (MS365 F1/F3 and O365 F3) and M365 Business licenses (M365 Bus Basic/standard/premium)

Your existing licenses are not affected. For any new licenses, you will always be able to choose between your existing licenses (with Teams) and the new licenses without Teams. When it is time for renewal, again, you will be able to opt for licenses either with or without Teams.

If you are a new customer and wish to purchase the following Microsoft licenses:

  • Enterprise licenses

After October 1, 2023, you will only be able to select licenses that exclude Teams and the corresponding Teams add-on.

  • Frontline and M365 Business licenses

You can choose between the existing licenses with Teams and the new licenses without Teams.
