To sustain our own growth as one of Belgium's largest IT players, Realdolmen's former shareholders and current management have opted to join the powerful international Gfi Group. In a world that keeps changing at an ever more rapid pace and offers exponentially expanding technological and economic opportunities, it is essential to keep moving and not stand still.

This doesn't just apply to Realdolmen – all organizations are facing the same issues. How can we stay in motion? How should we choose between all the opportunities, projects and priorities we encounter? In this fast-paced environment, how can we make decisions while under a great deal of pressure? How can we cope with the apparent paradoxes of this era? Do we choose people or figures? Should we focus on the future or on today? Should we dream big or go for quick results?

At Realdolmen, we believe in ‘both-and’ thinking, i.e. doing both things simultaneously and in parallel. This enables us to harness the power of opposites. As IT specialists, it is our job to help other organizations tackle all the various IT-related issues and to manage their seemingly paradoxical digital challenges.

With us, organizations need no longer choose between “operational IT” and “strategic IT”, between “unburdening” and “innovation”. Together with our customers, we work continuously on the operation and optimization of the operational IT component, constantly freeing up new resources to innovate for the future and become re-integrated into daily operations. The idea is to work on today and on tomorrow at the same time.

This is how we strive to get organizations into a Digital Flow. Digital Flow is not about one moment of digitization, nor a set of digital transformation projects. It is about making digitization a cornerstone of your organization. We help organizations inject that “both-and digital attitude” into their organization. We want all members of an organization – not just the CIO or the IT department – thinking in terms of “How can a digital system or digital tools help me to achieve my goal?”.

To us, Digital Flow is the successor to the Digital Transformation, which is currently still a hot topic. This context leads some organizations to keep launching unrelated digital projects, one after another, while others become paralyzed by uncertainty and do far too little. When asked whether they are achieving the desired results, the answer is often “unclear” or even “not really”.

Why? All too frequently, digital projects are seen as stand-alone projects, on a separate track, running parallel to the day-to-day ‘business as usual’ activities. It's perfectly fine for an organization to operate at varying speeds, as long as those tracks join up again on a regular basis – and for all members of the organization, not just a select group. The digital component is too often relegated to a side track, rendering it incapable of producing the desired results.

In recent years, Digital Transformation has become both a buzzword and a catch-all term, and all companies claim to be working on it; however, we've noticed a wide divergence with regard to both internal and external appreciation and the degree of success. At Realdolmen, we no longer use the term digital transformation, which implies a beginning and an end. Instead, we prefer a continuous digital flow, a never-ending story, with no starting point or conclusion, connecting today to tomorrow.

For Realdolmen and our customers, Digital Flow is the new normal as of 2019.
